No matter how popular weight machines and workout apparatus become, there is nothing quite like good old fashioned free weights, calisthenics, and running to build muscle properly. Workout machines of all types, to include treadmills and stair machines often force the body into unnatural positions to accommodate the machines design. In these positions, the body cannot move naturally and while your muscles will develop, they don’t develop the way nature intended.
Warming up with a good stretching routine followed by muscle building calisthenics such as push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, jumping jacks and a short run will oxygenate the blood and get your heart rate and respiration up to prime levels. This alone will improve success in the gym.
Hit the iron hard, but not too hard initially. Injuries can come quickly when you try to lift too much or do too many reps. You’ll want to have a partner when working free weights as well. Never try to bench press, leg press, or squat without a spotter; the chance for serious injury is too possible.
