What is written here is not a condemnation of Chinese people or culture.  It is not a rant against globalization or a demand for economic protectionism.  This is a call to consumers in the U.S. to become informed and take action against the tide of unregulated and sometimes deadly products making their way to our store shelves and households, many of which come from China.

This is not to say that the U.S. has a perfect safety record.  Food contamination and product safety issues are a problem here as well. The fundamental difference, however, is that many products and food ingredients produced in China are intentionally adulterated to cut costs and increase profits.  When we hear of knock-offs made in China we may think of fake Chanel handbags or pirated dvds.  Unfortunately, there has also been fake infant formula produced in China which resulted in the illness and deaths of infants there.  In fact, the worst offenses occur in China.  What is exported to the U.S. is actually the best of what China has to offer.  But it’s not good enough.  There are very few safety controls on Chinese companies, the Chinese government denies the seriousness of the problem, and U.S. government agencies responsible for food and product safety are underfunded and not appropriately empowered to protect consumers.

The intent of this blog is to create a repository of information on dangerous products imported from China and to provide avenues for action.

As a final note, I welcome any comments that are factual, civil and meaningful.  Any hateful speech directed at me or anyone else will be deleted from this blog.  If you want to exercise your right to hate speech, start your own blog.
