They’re Gonna Walk Before We Make ‘Em Run

According to the New York Times some of the food giants claim to be taking extra measures to ensure the safety of ingredients coming from China before there is a catastrophe in the human food supply chain similar to the poison wheat gluten disaster responsible for the deaths of thousands of pets in the U.S. and Europe.

So, what, we’re supposed to take their word for it?  Take it on blind faith that they will act differently than Menu Foods in the event that there is a problem and not sit on the information for weeks (giving top execs time to unload their stocks) before admitting that their food products contain poison?  I don’t think so.  It’s time for U.S. food companies to include country of origin for each ingredient on the label.  I believe I have the right to know if I’m eating a global mishmash cracker with some ingredients from countries with high health and safety standards and some from countries with, let’s say, a more lenient approach.

And if you still think food ingredients don’t pose any risk in the human food supply, then try to buy some Veggie Booty snacks, recalled for salmonella poisoning.  The suspected source of the contamination?  Ingredients from China.

Money talks and you know the rest…  So tell the food companies that you appreciate their efforts to increase safety tests, but unless they are willing to tell you where it came from, you’re simply not buying it.
